There's no reason to slow down because usb connection doesn't mean you're continuing to send large amounts of data.
If you connected the hard drive with usb, the work itself may be slow if you transfer a lot of data from that hard drive.
The amount of data that can be transferred to usb is slower than the hard drive that just connects to the computer.
