Rose Pineapple was created by Delmont Fresh in the U.S. using genetic engineering and was officially approved for sale by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December last year.
It was made by reducing the production of enzymes that turn the pink pigment, lycopene, into the yellow pigment, beta carotene.
"Rose" is known to taste sweeter than conventional pineapples. Delmont will also advertise Rose Pineapple as "a sweeter pink-skinned pineapple."
