Why did the name of eating seaweed become seaweed?

I heard that there was a reason why eating seaweed became the name of seaweed, but I forgot. ^^;

Kim Yeo-ik of Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do, first discovered the method of farming around 1650.
This is how they began to grow and spread throughout the country.
