Can I check if I receive a text message?

If you use an iPhone, you can check it when you send it to the iMessage.
The other person has to use an iPhone, too.
Turn on Settings -> Message -> iMessage.
You can also turn on Send Read Confirmation.
I can't check regular text messages.
