Which is correct, MACAU or MACAO?

macau macao macau

Based on the Macao notation, there are  MACAU and  MACAO.

I think MACAO is correct.

I thought MACAU would be a typo, but there are many places that use it.

Portuguese or China  Is the pronunciation something different?

Or it's because it's pronounced differently in English

In English, the old Portuguese notation Macao and the current Portuguese notation Macau are both correct, and since January 2016, the Macau government has adopted Macao as its official English name. However, the English language still prefers the mark Macau. In the English Wikipedia, Macau is also maintained as the headline. And in English and Portuguese, whether you write Macau or Macao, the pronunciation does not change. the pronunciation of Mercau in English and Makau in Portuguese The Korean word "Macao" or the Japanese word "カオ'" is influenced by the spelling Macao, and according to the Portuguese loanword notation enacted in 2005, it becomes "Macau."

I looked it up on Wiki and they said it's like this
