What happens to my visa when I transfer to a plane in China?

I'm supposed to transfer to a plane in China, but as far as I know, I have to get a visa in China, so do I have to apply for a visa in advance to transfer to China?

Or can I transfer by applying for a visa right away while transferring?

I was wondering what happens to the visa.
