When should I clean the air conditioner?

I don't think I'll have to use the air conditioner anymore, so I'm thinking of cleaning up. Do you usually clean and seal it before winter?

Or do you clean and use the air conditioner right before you use it?

I'd like to use a professional company for cleaning, too.

In my case, I tend to clean, so I do it once in the fall before I seal it, and then I do it again in the spring
In the fall, there was mold and dust during the summer, so I needed to clean it
If I don't clean before I use it, I need to clean it because it smells like dust
